SK Hynix and LG Displays to Make MicroOLEDs for Meta

The social media giant will be designing the chips to be manufactured as part of its ongoing investment in the mixed reality displays. The expected timing for all this is 2025 to 2026.

According The Elec, LG Display is relying on SK Hynix for the semiconductor wafter which it plans to produce at its oldest fab, M10, in Icheon, South Korea. M10 has a capacity to produce 100.000 12-inch wafers a month, of which 30% will be put aside for microLED production using 28 nm, and 45 nm techniques.

Not sure if this is of any measurable significance to Meta if you position it against Apple’s microLED capacity. Meta relies on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR for its core headset technology and has an agreement with that company to create customized chips based off the existing architecture, but none of this is head turning developments in the technology. It’s long-term positioning for manufacturing capacity at levels that are probably very speculative.
