Sharp, TiVo Extend Deal in Japan

What They Say

Tivo announced that it has extended its deal with Sharp Corp in Japan to use Tivo’s G-Guide products, including G-Guide HTML, G-Guide xD and remote schedule recording service across compatible television and Ultra HD Blu-ray recorder products. The deal includes the latest Aquos 8K series of TVs.

Additionally, the renewal with Sharp Corporation includes an expanded multi-year license to TiVo’s patent portfolios, enabling Sharp to build customizable content discovery services across its devices. This extension covers Sharp products worldwide.

What We Think

This deall follows on from a renewal of a similar deal between Tivo and Vodafone in Europe and Africa.

I was a very early convert to the concept of DVRs when I bought my first Tivo many years ago. When I bought it, the store I went to really had no clue what it could do and I reckoned that although business was good at the time, I could have made more money selling Tivos on a commission basis as they were a ‘no-brainer’ when you realised what they could do. I recently re-acquainted myself with the system after years with a Sky box as I switched to Virgin Media, which has a Tivo box as its high end option in the UK. Although it integrates OTT content OK, it’s not great and I usually access SVOD channels using a Roku stick. (BR)
