Sharp Looks for OLED Alliance

Reuters has reported that Sharp plans to ask the Japanese government to support an alliance between the company and Japan Display Inc (JDI) to develop OLEDs and help both companies compete against Korean suppliers. A Sharp executive said at the relisting of Sharp’s shares on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange that he would like to talk to the Innovation Network Corp of Japan (INCJ) about the idea. INCJ owns 36% of JDI, which is in some trouble after its biggest customer, Apple, switched to OLED technology for the iPhone X.

Analyst Comment

Neither JDI nor JOLED would comment to Reuters about the idea. Certainly, pooling of resources is something that has been common in the Japanese industry, in contrast to the Korean practice. (BR)
