A new Nikkei report has forecast that Sharp will report an operating loss in the second quarter of the year of ¥35 billion ($282 million), compared with a profit in Q2 a year earlier of ¥4.6 billion ($36.9 million). The company has continued to struggle with falling LCD smartphone panel prices sold to Chinese vendors.
Japan Display (JDI) is also expected to record losses in the second quarter of the year, though the company has said recently that it is aiming to secure 30-40% of the high-end smartphone panel market by 2020. The company is also aiming to increase its non-smartphone business to $4.05 billion by 2019, which would represent a threefold increase from 2014.
Sharp will release its first quarter results at the end of July, while JDI’s results will be published on 7th August.
