Sharp 8M-B32C1: New 8K HDR monitor with 1000 nits

What They Say

Sharp published details of a new 8K 31.5″ LCD monitor on its Japanese website. Luminance is 1,000 cd/m² (peak) and 800 cd/m² (full screen) with a claimed 1,000,000:1 contrast (1,300:1 native) . PQ and HLG are both supported and colour performance is 85% of Rec 2020. Response time is reported by Prad.de at 9ms, although this doesn’t seem to be on the Sharp website.

Features for video imaging and processing include

  • luminance clipping – showing where HDR video is brighter than the display can provide
  • Out-of-colour warning – showing where part of an image is outside Rec 709
  • Peaking – to highlight focus
  • false colour & monochrome mode
  • Marker for effective area and centre
  • Blue only – to help see noise in the image

The monitor uses Sharp’s Advanced Uniform Color Calibration Technology (Advanced UCCT) and can be calibrated with an external sensor and Sharp’s “Display Calibration Utility” software.

Power consumption is 260W. Availability is end of June, although no geography is specified.

What We Think

Sharp said that it is planning to make 150 units per month and has not announced the price. The backlight is described as direct LED, so we assume that means FALD to achieve the high level of dynamic contrast, but no details of zones were released. (BR)
