Sharp 8K Monitor Comes to Europe

What They Say

The 8K Association reported that Sharp NEC Displays will bring the 8M-B32C1 32″ 8K (7680 x 4320) monitor to market in Europe, after its launch in Japan. The monitor has 1,000 cd/m² of output and 10 bit colour. Full screen luminance is 800 cd/m².

The article looks in detail at the colour management and connectivity but gamut coverage is 85% of BT.2020 and 96% of DCI-P3. The association pointed out that the HDMI 2.1 port is a 48 Gbps connector to support incoming signals of 8K/60p 4:2:0. However, many professional applications for 8K will want a 4:2:2, 4:4:2, or 4:4:4 signal level. This requirement is supported via the 4xHDMI2.0 interface (the HDMI 2.1 interface does not have DSC support for these signals).

What We Think

No mention was made of pricing, but I dug out a price close to $19K in Japan. That’s not outrageous in the terms of mastering monitors for content creation. (BR)
