What They Say
At Photonics West, Schott highlighted its high refractive index glass RealView 1.9 lightweight ultra which it said allows ‘up to 50% lighter’ waveguides without reducing image quality. It also said that it has improved the flatness of its wafers by ‘up to 60%’, which also helps with the weight reduction. Overall, the firm is claiming that it can reduce the weight of HMDs by up to 15g per device.
The firm also announced new LightView packaging components (glass-to-metal sealed packages) that are intended to help package RGB laser chips and MEMS mirrors. LightView packaging consists of a window cap and an SMD style base. The side-emitting cap enables simplification in the coupling architecture, which in turn helps to reduce the overall device size. A metallic SMD base provides a platform and encapsulation for multiple laser chips with excellent heat dissipation properties, the firm said.
What We Think
The improved flatness of the glass adds to the features of the glass which was announced just a few months ago. (Schott Glass Reduces Waveguide Weight by 20%). (BR)
