SCHOTT Challenges Corning’s Dominance of Cover Glass with Launch of “Nearly Unbreakable” Xensation α

What They Say

We covered the Schott Xensation ? glass last week in a Display Daily (Schott Moves Nearer to ‘Unbreakable Glass’ for Smartphones) and now Bob O’Brien of DSCC has dug a bit more in depth into the topic – using his experience as a veteran of Corning. He points out that several of the claims for the Xensation ? glass are comparable to those for Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus. However, Corning does not release the composition of its glass, so it’s hard to compare. DSCC created a comparison table of some of the glass properties compared to the Corning Victus glass and the AGC Dragontail glass.

The article also highlights that Schott believes that its glass is competitive in performance with Apple’s ‘Ceramic Shield’ which is supplied by Corning on an exclusive basis as Apple contributed to the development cost.

What We Think

I confess, I was disappointed last week that I no longer had the expertise of Display Daily contributor, Norbert Hildebrand, who was a 17 year Schott veteran, but who has now retired.

The table suggests that there is very little difference between the performance of the Schott glass and the Corning Victus glass. That would mean little change in the technical aspects of the market, but Bob suggests that it might impact Corning’s ability to command a premium for its glass. My own feeling after hearing the way Schott talked about the glass being for the premium segment that it is likely to position its price close to Corning to try to extend the category a bit, rather than trying to pull prices down. As so often, the competition is likely to benefit consumers. (BR)
