Samsung Uses LED in Modular TV Concept

Samsung has been promoting curved TVs and monitors for some time (partly because it has a competitive advantage from its more vertically-integrated business model than other makers – Man. Ed.) and at CES, it was promoting the idea of curved monitors for “mainstream” users. There were a number of UltraHD monitors, but none of them was new (UD970/UE850/UE590)

There were four new curved monitors, aimed at gamers – the CF591, CF391, CF390 and CF398. The CF591 is a “frameless” 27″ 1800R monitor with a FullHD VA panel, 3,000:1 contrast, 81% of NTSC and with VGA. DisplayPort and HDMI connections. That makes the curve tighter than earlier curved monitors from the firm, which used a 4000R configuration. The CF391 and CF390 are 32″ and 27″ versions of the monitor with 5,000:1 and 3,000:1 contrast, respectively, and 72% of NTSC gamut. These monitors only have HDMI input and all three of these monitors are quoted as having 4ms response time and support for FreeSync over HDMI. The CF398 is a 27″ monitor with narrow bezels and a “Y-feet” stand. Few other details were revealed on the CF398.

As CES is a consumer show, you might be surprised that Samsung was promoting its LFDs, but, of course, a lot of retailers go to CES, so it’s a good chance to put products in front of them.

The main attraction was a new UHF-E ultra narrow bezel monitor with an image to image distance of just 1.4mm ((0.9mm top/left, 0.5mm bottom/right). There were no other details of the monitor available, but we’ll follow up over the next few weeks. The company boosted performance in its transparent display (TO55F), which was shown in a retail-style arrangement around the monitors. Brightness is now 150 cd/m², transparency is 45% and colour gamut has now reached 100% of AdobeRGB. The mirror display (ML55E) that the company has developed has now reached 55% reflcetance and 90% transmittance.

Samsung had a triple display with three of its 65″ 2,500 cd/m² displays in a portrait configuration and running on Samsung’s MagicInfo platform.
