Samsung has reportedly trademarked Direct Full Array Elite, suggesting that it plans to return to direct backlighting in the manufacture of its TVs in the future.
The KS9500 was the last Samsung set to use FALD, released in 2016.
None of Samsung’s QLED range released this year have used FALD, opting instead for LED edge-lighting, which cannot accurate reproduce HDR video due to a lack of control over luminance levels. Switching back to FALD would cause Samsung sets to be thicker in form factor, but would provide superior image quality, especially when watching HDR content.
