Samsung Takes Smart Signage Outdoors

Samsung’s new OMD displays are suitable for use in outdoor (OMD-K) and semi-outdoor (OMD-W) environments. Both new series consist of three sizes: 46″, 55″ and 75″. They feature ambient brightness sensors; 24/7 operability; and the ability to withstand temperatures as high as 110 deg (direct sunlight) on the screen.

Each of the new displays – which are identical apart from form factor and size (dual 10W speakers are also installed on the 46″ and 75″ OMD-W screens) – are second-generation Samsung Smart Signage models. An external PC or media player is not required, as the processing power is built in. The processors are quad-core 1GHz Cortex-A9 devices, with 3GB of RAM and 8GB of storage.

Magicinfo Premium S software is pre-installed. Magicinfo enables management of multiple displays at once from a single location, as well as from mobile devices. The displays can be used as part of a 10×10 videowall.

The OMD-K displays (OM46D-K, OM55D-K and OM75D-K) are supplied in a kit-type form factor, without a back cover, to be installed in specialised housings for outdoor use. The OMD-W models (OM46D-W, OM55D-W and OM75D-W) are standalone units.

S-PVA panels with 1920 x 1080 resolution provide a 5,000:1 contrast ratio, 178 deg viewing angles and a 6ms response time to each display. Colour gamut coverage is 72% NTSC, with 8-bit colour and 2,500 cd/m² of brightness (dimming to 400 cd/m²). DisplayPort, HDMI (x2), DVI-D, VGA, component, RS232 and RJ45 ports are featured.

Samsung is selling the OMD displays now, but list pricing was not published at press time.
