What They Say
Reacting to the Russian invasion and war on Ukraine, Samsung has said that it will suspend shipments to Russia. Sales of semiconductors in Russia accounted for less than 0.1% of Samsung Electronics’ profits, according to a report by Hana Financial Investment.
What We Think
Chinese brands will, no doubt, be happy to make up the shortfall in devices, but a lack of chips could hit some Russian businesses. Samsung was reported to have about 30% of the Russian smartphone market a year ago, by Counterpoint Research. As we reported this, there had been no news from LG, but that firm would, presumably, face some difficulty getting paid for shipments, as the Korea Times pointed out last week. (BR)
