Samsung’s The Terrace TV Receives Industry-First Outdoor Visibility Verification From UL

What They Say

Samsung put out a press release to announce that its ‘The Terrace’ outdoor TV has been verified for ‘outdoor visibility’ by US testing organisation, Underwriters Laboratories. This is the first set to be so certified. Specifications required for this certificate include:

  • peak brightness of 3,000 to 4,000 cd/m²
  • contrast of 1,000:1 in conditions of >10,000 Lux
  • colour volume of >80% in the same ambient lighting

The professional version also received certification.

The set is also certified to IP55 for water and dust resistance.

What We Think

On the one hand, it’s good to have certified performance for consumers and others to rely on and external organisations such as UL, TÜV et al will take their reputations seriously to do what they say. However, they are also commercial organisations that will test most things they are paid to. It may be that UL developed this specification and Samsung thought ‘we could meet that’. However, it seems more likely that the initiative was driven by Samsung. LCD, of course, has big advantages over OLED in this kind of application and in the future microLED will have even more advantages. (BR)
