Samsung’s new foldable phones draw strong preorders: reports

What They Say

The Korea Herald reported that the new Galaxy foldable smartphones are hitting high numbers for pre-orders. The Z Flip3 and Galaxy Z Fold3 are said to have reached 450,000 pre-orders by Sunday and will end today. It is expected that pre-orders could reach 600K and even 800K if unlocked handsets are included. In contrast, the paper said that Samsung’s previous foldable phone model, the Galaxy Z Fold2, saw a total of 80,000 units in presales.

According to statistics from one mobile carrier, 49 percent of preorders made for Galaxy Z Fold3 was from customers in their 20s to 30s, while the same age group accounted for 57 percent of preorders logged for Galaxy Z Flip3.

What We Think

There have been points in the last six or seven years since I first saw a prototype flexible smartphone when I wondered whether the category would ever become really practical. As usual, I should have remembered that you should ‘never bet against the engineers’. (BR)
