Samsung Relies on QDs to Compete With OLED

During a gathering at Samsung’s offices in Seoul the company’s head of TV, Kim Hyun-seok, reiterated Samsung’s stance on OLED TVs. He said that it is too early for such TVs to be launched; a view that will remain unchanged next year.

Instead of OLEDs, Samsung will rely on quantum dot LCD TVs. These will be shown at CES 2015 in January. A Samsung spokesperson has told ZDNet that cadmium is not used in its quantum dots – effectively confirming the Dow Chemical/Nanoco supply deal that we covered last month (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 42).

Samsung Display is developing an OLED printing method for TVs, to simplify mass production.
