What They Say
In line with the general trends towards reduced demand expectations in the market, the Elec has quoted a forecast that Samsung has reduced its TV volume forecast to 40 million from 45 million this year and that means that panel procurement will decline from 53/54 million units to 44 million. The drop will mean 20% lower sales volume this year, from 2021 and back to levels below the 2020 level.
The article quotes that Samsung has inventory of 16 weeks, up from 7 to 9 weeks before the pandemic. The article quotes Omdia as saying that utilisation of fabs had drop to around 77% in early June, down 4.5% from May and the lowest in five years.
Separately, Digitimes quoted The Elec and Omdia as a source for news that Samsung is reducing its MiniLED Neo QLED set forecast to ‘at most’ 3 million sets, from 3.0 to 3.5 million in the earlier plan. It said that sales of Neo QLED sets were around 1-1.5 million last year.
Samsung will lead in global shipment of miniLED-backlit LCD TVs in 2022, followed by China-based TCL with 2.0 million units, LG Electronics with 500,000 units and Sony with 300,000 units. TCL and LG shipped 400,000 and 60,000 such TVs respectively in 2021.
The article quoted a forecast for miniLED TVs from Omdia and we have put the data into the chart below.
It also gave a forecast for miniLEDs in tablets and notebooks, again quoting Omdia as the source that we put in a chart. The fluctuation is because Apple is likely to adopt OLED panels for its high-end iPad and notebook models in place of miniLED-backlit LCD panels beginning in 2024.
