Samsung Proposing Dual Width Panels

Samsung has been showing around some new LCD panels including a 49″ ‘double’ panel that has a 32:9 aspect ratio. We heard that the radius is 1800mm and resolution would be 3840 x 1080. The panel would be aimed at gamers and support 144Hz and is reported to have a 5,000:1 contrast ratio. Reports put production at September 2017.

Another report has suggested a design for more professional ‘cockpit’ applications, although there could be a 144Hz gaming version, and based on two 16:10 panels, so 32:10 (or 29:9 according to some). Resolution would be 3840 x 1200. The LCD mode would be VA with a target contrast of 5,000:1.

We also saw reports of a 40″ FullHD panel that is curved, but that is likely to be aimed at MFM/TV Replacement functions.

Analyst Comment

The 32:9 panel has been rumoured before, but hasn’t made it into production. Double width panels would get over the problem that with two monitors with bezels, the join is in the middle of the viewer’s eyeline. Three panels makes some sense, but two is a problem. Obviously, the curve would help Samsung to minimise the colour shift from off-axis viewing that might be obvious at this width. (BR)
