The Elec in Korea reports that both Samsung and LG are planning TVs with miniLED backllights to get closer to the contrast performance of OLEDs. The paper said that Samsung’s supply chain from Seoul Viosys and PlayNitride from Taiwan and that the firm would be more aggressive in developing miniLED than LG. LED count is said to be between 8K and 30K with sets in 55″, 65″, 75″ and 85″ in the Samsung sets. LG is said to be making 4K and 8K 70″ models.
The Elec quotes data from TrendForce that forecasts miniLED TV sales of 4.4 million in 2021 with 2 million being sold by Samsung.
The report also said that although Apple is using miniLED for the 12.9″ iPad Pro based on Epistar chips, TSMT surface mount technology with an LG cell and module assembly by Heesung, Samsung will only use miniLED for TV.
What We Think
The Taiwanese makers seemed to be the first to really espouse miniLED, but clearly Samsung has aggressive plans for the technology. (BR)
