Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 Reviewed

What They Say

TFTCentral reviewed the Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 ( LS32BG850NUXXU, or perhaps shortened to 32BG850) which has a 240Hz refresh rate with UltraHD and a miniLED backlight with 1,196 zones to achieve 2,000 cd/m² of peak output. Colour coverage is 95% of DCI-P3. The display is curved to a 1000mm radius.

TFTCentral was not able to get ‘anywhere near’ the 2,000 cd/m² of peak output in its tests.

What We Think

Earlier, this monitor was advertised in China as meeting DisplayHDR 2000 but at the time of writing there is no such performance level, with the current peak at 1400, but the Samsung set is not listed as complying with any of the VESA test levels.

The review praised the motion response, but there was clearly some disappointment at not being able to meet the published specs. It also didn’t like the ‘out-of-box’ settings (which may have been set that way to get a good energy label rating). On that point, we heard at IFA that some TV set makers have been able to meet the new EU energy ratings due in 2023 by using very specific settings on their sets. The EU insisted that measurements were done on the ‘out-of-box’ condition to dissuade makers from shipping with vivid/demo modes which can be power hungry as many users don’t set up their sets correctly.
