Samsung Looks Past OLED to QLED

Samsung stopped producing OLED TVs in 2013Korea’s ET News claims that Samsung will skip OLED TVs entirely, to focus on QLED (self-emitting quantum dot) technology. An unnamed Samsung official is quoted as saying, “There are problems regarding age and production cost with large products since they use organic material.” The company apparently plans to commercialise such sets in 2019.

Analyst Comment

This follows a quote from Samsung president Kim Hyun-seok, made earlier this month, when he said, “I wouldn’t say OLED is our future direction” (Samsung Insists ‘No Plans’ for Large OLED). (TA)
