Samsung Joins 200 Other Firms in Korea’s Metaverse Alliance

What They Say

The Korea Economic Daily reported that Samsung has joined a Korean government initiative to coordinate activities to create a metaverse. A total of 202 firms are involved in the initiative which kicked off with 25 firms in May. There are firms from telecoms, automotive and other industries.

The main objective of the alliance is to establish the country’s metaverse ecosystem by growing the metaverse-related AR, VR and extended reality (XR) sectors. The alliance has also designated six key industries that will adopt more metaverse technologies moving forward:

  • medicine
  • manufacturing
  • construction
  • education
  • retail and
  • national defence

The paper said that Samsung Electronics is currently developing its own AR glasses.

The government will also provide active support for various projects to be launched by the participating firms, amounting up to 30 billion won ($26 million) in 2022 and around ten projects will be chosen later this year.

What We Think

I would worry about an organisation or initiative with 200 members, but I guess there is some level of hierarchy! The metaverse is an intriguing concept, but is as vague as the Internet or IOT and is likely to take a long time to turn into a reality if it’s standards and collaboration centred. However, that kind of approach could be overtaken by a single company initiative like that being developed by Facebook.

I’ve added a tag on on the front of the website for ‘The Metaverse’ as I think the topic will be a long standing one for us. (BR)
