What They Say
Samsung Electronics said that it has added an Adaptive feature to HDR10+ that adjusts the way an image is presented based on the ambient lighting. The mode works with Filmmaker Mode from the UHD Alliance. Samsung and Amazon Prime Video have teamed up to enable Filmmaker Mode and HDR10+ Adaptive for Prime Video customers.
What We Think
Hmmm… On the one hand, I like the idea of modifying the image in a structured and planned way to respond to different ambient conditions. However, HDR10 is based on the PQ curve which is itself based on an absolute level of brightness on the display for each code. I assume that the Adaptive Feature must specify how the PQ curve must, or might be modified according to the ambient light. There must be some discretion to modify this adaption because different display technologies react differently to ambient light. One of the (many) reasons that LCD drove out PDP from the TV business is that in brighter environments, such as some retailers, the LCD maintained its contrast better than PDP. We’ll see if we can dig out a bit more technical detail. (BR)
