What They Say
Business Korea reports that Samsung is struggling with QA challenges in its microLED TVs and is selling ‘close to zero’ because of the combination of price and with defects showing in some TVs exhibited in showcases and stores. Omdia puts the number globally of microLED shipements at 1,000 and many of them will be for showrooms and samples. As a result the firm has deferred its plan to release 80″ and 90″ versions, below its 110″ current set.
The paper said that a 110″ set in Samsung 837 in Manhattan shows a number of defects, consistent with the same problems seen in Korean demo units.
What We Think
We are very used to the idea that LEDs, being solid state, are much more robust than the ‘vacuum and glass’ technologies that they are replacing. This is true of the devices themselves, but not of the sets which are prone to damage.
The issue of quality is a tricky one. When you ask for so much money, the demos have to be good, but it’s really hard to move demo units around the world and set them up perfectly. I’ll be at IFA next week and will have a good look at the Samsung sets on display and feed back. (BR)
