What They Say
Samsung put out a press release that said that it has a new OLED technology in the Galaxy S21 Ultra, that is said to be 16% more efficient. The firm said:
“novel organic material achieved its sharp increase in luminous efficiency by having electrons flow faster and more easily across the display’s organic layers.”
The firm said that it has been channeling much of its technological resources into securing “super-gap” competitiveness in the composition of more efficient organic display materials. To that end, the company has been closely collaborating with a number of global material companies, and widening its own talent pool in this field over the past decade.
What We Think
We suspected that there was some new material in the Galaxy S21 Ultra, as it has higher peak brightness than previous generations. It would have been surprising to see Samsung increasing the power budget for the display, given the pressure on power consumption from features such as 5G. If Samsung hadn’t said specifically that the display uses a different organic material, the idea of ‘having electrons flow faster and more easily’ would have looked more like an improvement in the backplane with improved electron mobility.
