What They Say
The Elec reports that Samsung Display has started test operation of its QD-OLED production line in Asan. The Q1 line is an 8.5th generation line (2200 x 2500mm). Q1 is expected to operate at a rate of 15,000 substrates per month in the beginning. It has a capacity of 30,000 substrates.
From December, it will take Samsung Display around three months to properly set-up the necessary steps for production and around six months to stabilize yield rate.
The report also confirmed that Samsung Display will cease its LCD operations in March next year after extending the life because of the relatively firm market.
What We Think
As we have reported, the biggest issue for this production line is probably finding customers. Although Sony is reported to have signed up to use the panels, Samsung’s own VD TV division is focusing on its miniLED backlit technology as Barry set out in his recent DD article (Samsung Visual Display Division Forsakes QD-OLEDs in Favor of MiniLED TVs) (BR)
