Samsung Display Shows Asymmetric Folding Smartphone Privatel

What They Say

The Korea Herald described a concept smartphone shown privately by Samsung Display at CES. The concept uses asymmetric display sizes so that when folded, one part of the display is still visible, eliminating the need to have a second display. A translucent plastic cover slides over the area left. The image was left out of the press kit from the presentation.

Also shown was the Flex S concept which has in and out curves (image). Also shown were a 17.3″ foldable panel for IT products and a slideable 7.4″ that opens out for tablet applications.

What We Think

Samsung Display has been showing folding concepts for quite a few years. I’m not convinced by the Flex S concept as I’m generally sceptical about out-folding because of the risk of damage. I like the idea of a tri-fold but the ‘outer’ has to wrap right around the ‘leaf’ that folds inwards and that would be a tricky big radius, while the inner leaf would need a very tight radius. That’s very challenging, but then again – little of the development of flexible OLEDs has been easy! (BR)
