The Elec reported data from Omdia that showed that Samsung Display’s OLED shipments fell 9% in January from December to 45 million units because of low sales of the iPhone Mini. Samsung is reported to be sole supplier of OLEDs for the Mini.
The overall OLED market hit 53 million units, also down 9%, with Samsung supplying 45 million (85%). LG is said to have shipped 6 million for the iPhone 12.
All smartphone displays including LCD was 164 million units, down 4% on December.LTPS LCDs took more than A-si at 52 million vs 49 million with firmer sales than for OLED.
In total shipment ranking, Samsung Display was first, followed by runner-up BOE and Tianma which ranked third. The three companies combined supplied 65% of all smartphone panels in January. BOE recorded 44 million unit shipment, but most of its supply is LCD. Tianma moved 17 million units, which was also mostly LCD while OLED only accounted for 2% (300,000) unit.
What We Think
Nothing remarkable here. January would typically be a relatively weak month. In normal times, there might be an expectation of lots of new models at MWC in February. (BR)
