Samsung Display Restructures Organization to Focus on Foldables and Microdisplays

The Elec is reporting that Samsung Display has undertaken a major organizational restructuring in order to strengthen its capabilities in foldable displays and microdisplays for extended reality (XR) devices.

The reorganization creates a dedicated foldables team within the A business unit, which handles Samsung’s largest customer, Apple. This team will concentrate expertise to maintain Samsung’s lead in the foldable phone market as competition heats up with a view to strengthening Samsung’s position with Apple for its future foldable products.

Additionally, the company elevated its microdisplay development efforts into a separate team reporting directly to the CEO. This team, known as the M Project, is tasked with accelerating research into microdisplays for augmented and virtual reality applications. The Strategic Marketing Office was also downsized into a Strategic Marketing Team under the new structure, with the aim of improving operational efficiency. Personnel changes accompanied the reorganization, including several vice presidents taking on new roles leading key divisions.

CEO:

  • Choi Joo-sun – Retained as CEO, overseeing reorganization and focusing company on future technologies

Vice Presidents:

  • Kwonyoung Choi – Moved from HQ planning team head to head of A Team
  • Heo Cheol – Replaces Choi as head of HQ planning team. According to Samsung, Cheol architected a smooth withdrawal from the LCD business and set up a new QD-OLED business strategy, while leading investment in the Gen 8.6 IT business
  • Yongwook Jeong – New head of downsized Strategic Marketing Team

Other Execs:

  • Sungchul Kim – President & former CTO, leads M Project foldable team as project leader. Kim is a highly decorated and well-known figure among display technologists. In 2021, he received the SID’s Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize for his contributions to the successful launch of the mass-production of AMOLEDs with LTPS technology and his contributions to the development of flexible OLEDs.
  • Jae Beom Choi – Vice president, leads M Project team directly under Kim
