What They Say
The Elec reports that Samsung is looking at supplying LTPS TFT modules for its direct LED-based TVs. Up to now, the paper reported, the firm has used PCBs for displays above 100″. The VD division had planned to use AUO to provide the substrates, but has now decided to try to use Samsung Display. The substrates are being proposed to increase the density of LEDs above the level possible with PCBs. The Elec expects the Display group to use its A1 G4 line in Choenan to make the 9.7″ diagonal modules. They will be complex, with up to 24 mask processes needed, which is twice as many as those involved in making smartphone OLED panels.
The article reported that Samsung expects to make 400 to 500 microLED TVs this year.
It seems that the VD group is likely to be more open to QD-OLED if the Display division helps with the LTPS supply – part of the on-going negotiations between the two groups!
What We Think
As we discussed yesterday in the article on Sony’s Crystal LED, moving from a passive matrix has a number of advantages in reducing the current needed. (BR)
