Samsung Display Considers production of 27″ QD-OLED monitor panel

What They Say

Quoting UBI Research’s CEO, Coong Hoon Yi speaking at an event in Seoul, The Elec said that Samsung Display (SDC) is considering building a G8.6 fab to make 27″ panels for monitor applications using its QD-OLED technology. Apple would be the main customer for these panels, the researcher said. The plan would be an alternative to making tandem OLEDs for that application as costs are said to be lower. However, tandem OLEDs might be used for tables and notebooks.

While A5 will focus on QD-OLED panels, two-stack tandem RGB OLED will be made in its existing L8 line, which previously made liquid crystal display panels.

What We Think

Monitors typically have lower ppi and need to cost less per unit of area than those for notebooks and tablets, while power consumption is less critical. However, service life in use is likely to be significantly longer on monitors which are also likely to be more sensitive to burn-in issues.  (BR)
