Samsung Display Considers Expanding Notebook OLED Production

What They Say

The Elec in Korea reports a talk given in Korea by UBI Research has said that he thinks that Samsung Electronics is unlikely to use QD-OLED for its TVs. Instead, it plans to use the panels for a monitor. Choong Hoon Yi said that Sony might buy QD-OLED panels for TV to allow better negotiation with LG Display for OLEDs for TV applications.

He also said that Samsung Display is thinking about building a G6 rigid LTPO OLED fab at its L7-2 plant in Asan, which is currently used for LCDs. The panels would be used for notebook panels. The plan is not certain and depends on demand development in 2022. Capacity could be 15K or 30K per month.

Yi said that Samsung Display is still reviewing its plans for QNED with investments to be made later this year for production from 2023.

What We Think

This comment about QD-OLED conflicts with the report from around a month ago that a deal had been done between the display and set company for QD-OLED. (BR)
