What They Say
The Elec reports that Samsung Display (SDC) had been asked to make a microOLED by its parent company, by Apple and by Meta for AR and VR devices. The paper said that SDC has not been devoting much attention to this.
LG has been developing its technology in this area and this is putting some pressure on SDC. The Elec said that LGD is ordering equipment to make microOLEDs for Apple.
What We Think
A few years ago, I gave a talk about XR at a conference when I highlighted that one of the challenges for headset markets is that the market, in volume terms, is pretty small and that makes it relatively unattractive for the biggest display makers. The relative lack of interest from SDC reflects this, I think.
I tried to get a good photo of the 0.42″ 1280 x 720 3500ppi device that LGD showed at Display Week, but despite my good camera, I failed to get a good one. The device has 7,000 cd/m², 97% of DCI P3 and 120Hz refresh. (BR)
