What They Say
The Korea Herald reports that Samung has been attacked by a lot of users in Korea over reports that an add-in, the ‘Game Optimizing Service’, or GOS, may kick in to slow down the performance of apps on the latest S22 smartphones. The software add-in is designed to avoid excessive heat and reduced battery life when playing games.
The article reports rumours that Samsung may have omitted the ‘vapor chamber’ that has previously used for cooling, to reduce cost and boost margins. However, the teardown by iFixit highlights an ‘ultra-thin’ stainless steel chamber. iFixit said
“we’ve seen a lot of heat dissipation efforts in here: oodles of graphite tape, some serious thermal paste, and now this beefier vapor chamber? At a guess we’d say that catching up to Apple silicon is starting to make Samsung sweat, pun intended. Faster processors tend to throw off more heat, and if you can’t get them to run super efficiently, then you have to bleed that heat off. “
The Herald points out that Samsung’s head of Mobile, Roh Tae-Moon, is due to be recognised as a new board member for Samsung on March 16th for ‘maximizing profit by “cutting expenses.”’
Some buyers are cancelling their pre-orders over the issue. Samsung said that the GOS system does not kick in on apps other than games.
What We Think
Ouch. This won’t help the Samsung brand at all. As we reported the other day ‘Samsung’s next-gen S22 chip is almost as good as Apple’s… in the iPhone 11‘
iFixit awarded the S22 just 3/10 for repairability. (BR)
