Samsung Boosts Sensor Resolution

What They Say

Samsung announced new image sensors, a 200 megapixel sensor (HP1) with 0.64?m pixels and a ‘Dual Pixel Pro’ device (GN5) with two photodiodes in a single 1.0?m pixel.

The higher resolution HP1 has a technology that combines up to 16 pixels to a single one that allows a 12.5 megapixel resolution for low light environments and there are also intermediary resolutions using 2×2 arrangements.

The sensor can capture 8K video at 30fps. The HP1 merges four neighboring pixels to bring the resolution down to 50MP or 8,192 x 6,144 to take 8K (7,680 x 4,320) videos without the need to crop or scale down the full image resolution.

The GN5 has an all-directional autofocusing technology, that can substantially boost autofocusing capabilities, Samsung said. This technology places two photodiodes, the smallest in the industry, within each 1.0?m pixel of the sensor either horizontally or vertically to recognize pattern changes in all directions. With one million phase-detecting multi-directional photodiodes covering all areas of the sensor, the ISOCELL GN5’s autofocusing becomes instantaneous, enabling sharper images in either bright or low-lit environments.

What We Think

I know it’s not a display, but I assume that readers are interested in other kinds of pixels, as well. The sensor is also likely to boost the ability to capture 8K video. (BR)
