Samsung Display will be supplying a 7″ OLED display for Audi’s all-new electric SUV, the e-tron. The car-maker first showed the vehicle at a world premiere event in San Francisco, United States last month. It features virtual exterior mirrors — a first for a volume-production car, Samsung says. Side-view cameras allow the driver to see what’s happening outside in real time on a Samsung OLED display installed on the inside of each front-seat door.
The OLED panels replace the function of wing mirrors, with a driver-controllable camera installed at each side of the dashboard. A touch function on the displays enables instant zooming of the image in or out when parking, turning or heading down the highway. Audi said that the wide view of the virtual exterior mirrors reduces blind spots and are able to provide a clear view even in dark, cloudy weather. The side-view cameras are also much narrower than conventional wing mirrors, cutting the overall vehicle width by 15 centimetres and reducing wind noise.
Samsung Display is also supplying 5.7″ OLED displays for back-seat control of an array of climate control, seat, lighting and media functions in Audi’s 4th-generation A8, which was launched in 2017.
