Safety Demand Brings Forward Automotive Display Milestone

Automotive monitor shipments will rise 30% this year, says NPD DisplaySearch, led by Japan Display, Sharp and AUO.

85 million automotive displays will be shipped in 2014, as demand is growing quickly. Car manufacturers are adding multiple monitors to the driver’s console, as consumers increasingly look to save energy and drive safely. The trend is expected to increase shipments of TFT-LCD units to 100 million in 2016, rather than the original forecast of 2017.

The market this year will be led by Japan Display, with a 20% market share. Sharp (17%) will follow, with AUO at 14%. Innolux – last year’s market leader – has reduced its low-cost shipments to China this year to raise profitability. Instead, Innolux is focusing on the high-end market in Europe and the USA.
