Ron Martin on Superiority of Panasonic’s OLED

In a video by AVForums, Ron Martin of Panasonic Hollywood Labs has explained more about why the company considers its OLED TV superior to those of other companies – despite the fact that they are all using the same panels from LG Display.

According to Martin, Panasonic’s processing expertise means that the company can overcome the deficiencies in the panel. “With an OLED, we have a remarkable ability to make – true black – for the first time. But just as we come out of black, we know where the panel has issues. Maybe it’s issues in the corners of the flat field, maybe it’s just the accuracy of the black levels as they come up, as it gets brighter through the mid-tones into the whites. We know how it handles colours, and where it doesn’t handle colours – and, again, with our electronics we can now tune that to a level of precision that we just haven’t been able to achieve before”.

The interviewer brings up the issue of banding just above black, which have been said to be affecting “another manufacturer’s” set. Martin says that Panasonic has absolute control over the panel – “That’s the whole point” – and that these issues have been eliminated.

On the issue of colour gamut, Martin says that the TV will be able to reach DCI-P3: “We’re very close to DCI now, there’s a few things that we’re going to tweak along the way to ensure that”.

The interview touches upon the issue of curved versus flat displays. According to Martin, the high uniformity (thanks to the glass panel) and curve lower reflections from ambient light enough to make a real difference to the viewing experience.
