Roku Reaches 55M Active Users as Total Streaming Hours Fall Behind

What They Say

Just after I published the article on Roku’s customer, TCL (TCL Electronics Bullish on First Half of 2021), yesterday, I spotted an article in the Hollywood Reporter that highlighted that Roku added 1.5 million active accounts in Q2 of this year, bringing its total base to 55.1 million users. However, total viewing hours dropped as viewers started to go out of the home again. Still the users watched 17.4 billion hours of video.

The firm’s CFO, Steve Louden said that average streaming hours for active accounts amounted to 3.5 hours per day, which he said was “similar” to Roku’s pre-COVID levels.

The firm made a good profit overall ($69.1 million), but the player business (as distinct from the platform business) made a loss at the GP level. Check here for the financial details.

What We Think

The 3.5 hours per day sounds right to us and is the result of dividing 17.4 billion hours by 55.1 million users over 91 days. (BR)
