Right To Repair Rules Will Extend Lifespan Of Products, UK Government Says

What They Say

New ‘right to repair’ rules have been brought in in the UK that include the obligation to supply spare parts for TVs. The new rules apply to products bought from Thursday, but manufacturers have a grace period of up to two years to make spare parts available.

Anything other than simple spares can be restricted to qualified repairers and spares have to be available for up to 10 years in some products. Displays are covered in a specific chapter and with requirements in Schedule 19. Spare parts for displays that have to be maintained for 7 years are very limited (see graphic)

What We Think

The list of spares that must be made available is really pretty poor. Admittedly, PSUs and connectors are the most likely to fail, but really, this legislation is not going to make much difference to consumers. (BR)
