What They Say
The Korea Herald reports that there may have been some change in the discussions between Samsung and LG Display over the supply of OLEDs, with a deal becoming more likely after ‘the outlook for their partnership was dimming at least for this year’. Shipments are believed to be possible from September.
The article also said that the muted launch of QD-OLED TVs in the US had been because of low yield in manufacturing by SDC which is reported to be at around 50% to 60% or around 500K – 600K annually. The report said Samsung is planning to sell between 1.5 million and 2 million OLED sets this year, so most of them would have to use WOLED panels to reach that number.
What We Think
This story has really run and run, which is no real surprise given the long rivalry and competition between the technologies and companies. After SDC pushed the TV division to support QD-OLED, I imagine the TV group are giving the panel division a hard time over the difficulty in supply. (BR)
