Qualcomm & Razer Release Hand-held Gaming Reference Design

What They Say

A hat-tip today to Jon Peddie for the news that Qualcomm has released a handheld game console reference design that uses a 6.65″, wide aspect ratio, 400 cd/m², FHD+ (~2000 × 1080) and with 120 Hz support. Other articles identify the display as an OLED and the chip supports 10 bit HDR (at up to 144Hz with UltraHD on an external display). The article said that the reference design runs Android, but a Windows version is being considered. The reference design is based on the new Qualcomm Snapdragon G gaming optimised processor which has a better GPU, top-end CPU, and memory. The dimensions of the prototype device are 293 mm × 116 mm × 21.5~52 mm, and it weighs just a little over 500 g.

Razer is distributing the reference design and is the first partner.

The chip itself is also being aimed at STBs and ‘micro game consoles’.

What We Think

I guess we’ll see a number of different implementations with different levels of ‘added value’ from almost straight copies of the reference design up to much better units. Good times for gamers! (BR)
