What They Say
Qualcomm is reported by Protocol Entertainment to be developing a chip, the SM8550, due at the end of the year or later, that will support AV1 native decoding. The article reports that Qualcomm had previously said that it would add support, but that it had a long planning cycle.
The article also lists Samsung’s Exynos 2200 chip and chips from Mediatek and Broadcom as supporting decoding. It also said that Google is developing a Chromecast version that would support the codec.
AV1 has been used by YouTube and Netflix, while Disney is said to be ‘in an exploratory phase’ which is the same as HBO Max.
What We Think
The article believes that this support from Qualcomm could be a key moment in broadening support for AV1. As I mentioned recently, there is a good guide to codecs here. (BR)
