Qualcomm fined €997 for Apple Exclusivity Deal

Qualcomm has been fined €997 million ($1.2 billion) by the EU for a deal that the company made in 2011 that rewarded Apple for an exclusive agreement with the firm for LTE baseband modems. As a result of the incentive, Apple did not buy from Intel. Qualcomm said that it strongly disagreed with the EU Commission and would appeal to the General Court of the EU.

Both Apple and Intel declined to comment. Apple was not seen to have done anything wrong. However, Apple and Qualcomm remain in dispute over other issues of pricing.

There is an ongoing investigation into whether Qualcomm used predatory pricing to drive out rivals (especially Icera, now owned by Nvidia) in modem chips in 2009 to 2011.
