What They Say
UBI Research has issued a press release that gives some background on the QNED technology being developed by Samsung Display as the next step after QDOLED. The device consists of a pixel layer with a nanorod LED on the TFT structure of a 3T1C matrix used in large OLEDs, and a colour conversion layer consisting of QDs and CF (color filter) on top.
The driving is complicated by the need to use two different driving systems. One of the systems will be used for aligning the nanorods.
The firm said that Samsung is concentrating on work to ensure the uniformity of the technology using an adaptive driving system that can compensate for the variable distribution of the nanorods.
The release is not in a format that we would publish on Display Daily, but we have made it available for download below.

What We Think
For those that haven’t been following QNED, we had an article a while ago.that gave an overview (Are Quantum Nano Emitting Diodes (QNEDs) the Next Big Thing?) Although Samsung Display is getting closer to QDOLED production and you might think that would divert it, it seems that many of the technologies and production facilities could be used for QNEDs as the key change is the replacement of the Blue OLED emitters with the Nanorod LEDs. The rest of the structure has some similarity. (BR)
