Projecting the Future of Retail

Retailers visiting the Retail Design Expo – part of the Retail Business Technology Expo and Retail Digital Signage Expo on 9-10 March – will see the UK debut of DisplayMapper that is set to change the face of retail.

Having created retail projection showstoppers like Harrods’ Faberge installation, Projection Artworks developed DisplayMapper for retailers that want to recreate this type of next-generation ‘magic’ on a smaller and more affordable scale.

Optoma, Projection Artworks and Texas Instruments are coming together at the Retail Design Expo to showcase retail applications for projection with real case studies that have generated greater engagement and revenue at the point of purchase.

On their stand (B30) the trio will have a live demonstration area showing how to use the DisplayMapper software together with Optoma’s LED projectors.

Nick Price, Territory Manager at Optoma, said: “Laser and LED projectors are now a cost effective retail display option. Projections can be daylight visible and maintenance costs for bulbs replacement have been eradicated through LED and laser technology which can provide an astonishing 20,000 hours of impressive, virtually maintenance-free operation.”

Optoma has been at the forefront of technology for digital signage and retail displays with its award-winning projectors engineered with DLP® technology from Texas Instruments.

Visitors at the show will see projection mapping displays using Optoma’s LED and laser projectors on sportswear, luxury goods including watches, technology products and FMCG.

Tom Burch from Projection Artworks said: “As consumers get evermore savvy, retailers need to move beyond the screen to grab their attention, engage them and increase sales. Projection mapping allows digital content to be applied on or around physical products or spaces to create this impact.”

DisplayMapper is the world’s first cloud-based, projection-mapping, content management and projector control system which has made global, scalable retail projection rollouts possible.

Tom added: “DisplayMapper is a low-cost, turnkey technology solution that can help any retailer – big or small – create truly engaging project mapped displays. By merging video mapping, content management and projection control into one unit, DisplayMapper will breathe new life into retail displays.”

“Advancements in display technology allow retailers to incorporate engaging in-store displays,” said Dave Duncan, DLP Products business manager at Texas Instruments. “By using Texas Instruments DLP technology, Optoma has the flexibility to scale and customise their solutions for LED or laser-based projection displays.”

Retailers will also see a new dynamic solution for stores that can sweep marketing messages and imagery across their shop floor, wall and ceilings. The Mirror Head from the Dynamic Projection Institute is perfect to create engaging projection mapped retail displays. It comprises a high-tech mirror that is digitally operated and can move either rapidly or slowly to project pictures, videos and text onto any surface.

At the stand two Mirror Head units, each combined with a new lamp-less ZU650 laser projector from Optoma, will demonstrate the dynamic solution with imagery moving across different surfaces within the retail displays.

The Retail Digital Signage Expo 2016 takes place from 9-10 March 2016 at Olympia, London. The event is free to attend. To register visit: www.retaildesignexpo.com/free-registration

Tom Burch from Projection Artworks will be speaking at the event with Optoma’s Justin Halls and Rob Hollands from creative agency Anthem (12:50pm on Thursday 10 March). Together they will share how a recent POS retail experience installed in a major supermarket stimulated customer engagement and massively increased sales. The session will examine the role of projection in retail with case studies from Faberge at Harrods, Topshop and Quality Street. The discussion will also look at the latest technology for retailers to grab customer attention to challenge ‘flat panel thinking’ and applications bringing the physical and digital experience together into one seamless customer experience. The session will take place in Theatre 1.
