Polaroid may be a well-known camera brand, but it has a share of the display products market. The company produces TVs, smartphones and tablets. CES 2016 marked the launch of Polaroid’s first UltraHD TVs.
Set for availability in the spring, Polaroid’s TVs will only be launched in the USA. They are manufactured by One Diamond, under a licensing model, in 43″, 48″, 55″ and 65″ sizes. They will cost between $400 and $1,000.
All of the TVs feature up to four HDMI 2.0 ports (capable of carrying UltraHD content at 60fps) and support for the HEVC codec. They have a 5,000:1 contrast ratio and 60Hz refresh rate, or 120Hz on the 65″. We asked Polaroid about the high contrast ratio, which implies VA panels, rather than the more common IPS. The company told us that these units, which were prototypes, were likely to be using VA panels. Polaroid has several different sources for the panels in its new TVs, some of which will supply IPS and others that will supply VA.
Polaroid also told us that a new smart TV partner will be announced later this year.
The Polaroid Power and Snap are new smartphones, which will be released soon. Both are available as unlocked devices, costing $250 (Power) and between $130 and $180 (Snap).
Available in a single size (6″), the Polaroid Power has 1920 x 1080 resolution, and runs Android 6.0 on a 64-biit octa-core processor. It has 32GB of storage, dual SIM slots and 4G connectivity. The Polaroid Snap, on the other hand, is available in three sizes: 5″, 5.5″ and 6″. These models have 1280 x 720 resolution and use a quad-core processor to run Android 5.1. They have up to 16GB of storage, with 13MP (rear) and 5MP (front) cameras.
We also saw new 9″ and 10″ quad-core tablets, running Android 5.0, and a 10.1″ convertible PC, which will be released later this year.
