PMA Research (PMA), the worldwide market information experts on large displays, has published their latest sell-through tracking report on large-format (32-inch and larger) flat panel displays being sold by leading U.S. Distributors who typically serve commercial markets.
As the pandemic marches into month number six, overall sales of large-format LCD, OLED and dvLED displays through the U.S. distribution channel were better in August than July, and much stronger than they were during the second quarter. While the sales performance was inconsistent among Distributors who participate in the PMA Research Tracking program, and most participants reported August sales short of last year, there were a few bright spots to note.
Year-to-date consumer television sales volumes through Distribution have been running ahead of 2019, and August continued that trend with a low double-digit gain over August 2019. Consumer entertainment buying has been elevated throughout the third quarter as some summer spending usually earmarked for travel and live entertainment has been instead used for in-home entertainment upgrades.
Unit sales for commercial televisions also showed a modest uptick in August over July’s strong performance. This type of TV, which can serve as both a rigorous-use television and a display used for content sharing, has been popular in the education market, particularly higher ed. These commercial TV’s are often rated for 16/7 usage, have some education and business friendly features and a longer warranty than a consumer TV. At less than half the price of true commercial 75″ displays, these professional TVs are grabbing volume share but not significantly increasing revenues.
PMA Research also noted that the 75-inch size segment nearly doubled in volume over August 2019, boosted mostly by the brisk sales of Samsung’s 75″ Pro TV and partly by the increased sales of 75″ interactive displays.
Finally, August saw an additional $2M in revenues for Direct-View LED video walls sold by Distributors. And year-to-date revenues jumped to $13M, which is more than double the August 2019 year-to-date revenues for the channel.
PMA’s monthly Flat Panel Distributor Tracking report offers timely sell-through data and analysis on unit sales and market trends of large-format displays sold by leading U.S. AV and IT Distributors. These reports are ideal for tracking product and channel trends.
