PlayStation 4 Sales Will Overtake the PS3 This Year

Sony has announced a reduction in the number of PlayStation 4 consoles being sold. 19 million consoles were sold during the 2017 fiscal year, down from 20 million the previous fiscal year. The company has predicted a further 19 million will sell during this fiscal year.

76 million PlayStation 4s have been sold since its launch in 2013, which means that the console will soon overtake the lifetime sales of its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, which launched in 2006 and was discontinued after a decade on sale.

Sony also revealed that its PlayStation business’ revenue grew by 17.8% year-on-year, creating an operating profit of ¥177.5 billion ($1.62 billion). An increase in software sales and PlayStation Plus subscriptions is predicted to offset any revenue loss from reduced hardware sales, creating a 7% increase in profit.
