Pimax VR headset Crystal will be cheaper than expected

What They Say

VR headset maker, Pimax, has revealed more details of its forthcoming Crystal VR headset. It will have eye and face tracking and use QLED displays with 2880 x 2880 resolution and miniLED backlights at up to 160Hz frame rate. The headset is intended to be used with a driving PC and uses a 5 metre DisplayPort 1.4 cable and Wi-fi 6E is also supported. An optional dongle supports WiGig for wireless display. Pimax plans to offer an optimised system unit with integrated WiGig.

There is a ‘quick-change’ 6000 mAh battery on the back of the headstrap. There are two versions:

  • Lighthouse Cover – with lighthouse tracking
  • Mixed Reality Cover version – with passthrough VR

The lenses are  exchangeable, glass-coated aspherical lenses that are claimed to minimise ‘God Rays’ and the headset has a 140° FOV with one lens, and 35ppd or 42ppd with another. The headset has an adjustable IPD from 57-71mm.

Pricing has been set at $1,599 but there is no launch date, yet.

What We Think

There is a video here. Pimax said that it has new materials to make the headset lighter than the early 8K headset.  (BR)
