Pimax 5K Super VR Launch (But it’s not 5K)

What They Say

A hat tip to Jon Peddie for flagging up the news that Pimax has a new ‘5K’ headset with refresh up to 180Hz after he saw my DD about Varjo (You Can’t Make Things Better and Cheaper, or Can You?). The headset has the same 2560 x 1440 pixel LCD displays, with a claimed 200° FOV (I can’t quite get my head around that! Maybe 100° for each eye, like the claim on the resolution!). The frame rate has been boosted to 180 Hz and is available for sale from the firm for $750.

Like many of Pimax’s headsets, the “5K” Super is tracked via either SteamVR 1.0 or 2.0 tracking beacons, which must be purchased separately at its base $750 price. A bundle is however available for $1250 which includes two SteamVR 2.0 base stations and two Valve Index controllers.

What We Think

The new version of the firm’s headset was described by one person as a ‘competitor to Varjo’, but this product is a quarter of the price of the Varjo headset and is really aimed at gamers, I think, given the high frame rate. I find the use of the 5K claim annoying. The company recently announced that it had received investment funding. (Pimax Receives USD$20M Series B Funding )(BR)
